about

QUIET AND SIRENS is a homemade musical project giving voice to the season we're living through together. It merges my interest in narrative medicine with my love of music and storytelling.

I wrote these seven narrative songs in late spring and early summer 2020 in New York City and recorded them in my apartment bedroom during a two-week quarantine — using whatever instruments and technology were available in the apartment (essentially a keyboard, a microphone, a forlorn GarageBand program, and a bunch of household objects).

Each song and its "storyteller" is inspired by re-imagining various personal testimonies, interviews, and expressions of grief, hope, anger, and determination shared during the spring and summer of 2020 in news articles, literary pieces, blog posts, and on social media. QUIET AND SIRENS speaks to the power of empathetic imagination and the importance of finding ourselves in each other’s stories, using whatever tools we have to bear witness during a time of cataclysm.

AT-HOME INSTRUMENTS USED:
Yamaha P-120 digital piano, voice, water glass, pen, music stand, wooden frog guiro, doumbek, djembe, body slaps, hand claps, Pyrex container, spoon, fabric journal, cardstock paper, finger snaps, glass candle, bells mallet, recorder.

SPECIAL NOTE:
“Only the Angels” is dedicated to my maternal grandpa, and more recently, my paternal grandma, both of whom recently passed away from complications of COVID-19.
